Come Closer 2020

Come Closer (2020) was an installation for the art project MIRRORS of TIME organized by Forum Triangulare and curated by Annemarie van Laethem, Eric Croux and Mat Verberkt in castle d’Aspremont-Lynden.

In the context of the 'Van Eyck year' (2020-2021) Charlotte was commissioned to make an artwork bridging the present and the time in which Jan van Eyck operated. She chose to focus on Van Eyck's most famous artwork: The mystic Lamb (1432), that recently opened up during an extensive restoration campaign. The installation ignores iconography and focuses on the physical aspect of the altarpiece and how one can see it as a numinous object that tries to communicate with us. The golden panel follows the central painting of The Mystic Lamb in dimensions and structure. On the position where once the saints were depicted, now the beholder is reflected, whereas the X-ray reveals some of the hidden stories the artwork carries within.

This installation was later presented in Saint Bavo's Cathedral in Ghent, close to the original altarpiece by Jan van Eyck.
